5 Top Dry Flies For Fly Fishing Patagonia

5 Top Dry Flies For Fly Fishing Patagonia

5 TOP DRY FLIES FOR Chilean Patagonia

We are going to list five of our favorite dry flies for fly fishing Patagonia, Chile this summer.  These patterns are proven patterns and should be a staple in every Patagonia fly anglers arsenal.

THE FAT ALBERT

The Fat Albert comes from the vise of Brent Taylor; This fly can be fished solo or in a dry/dropper rig. From the looks and construction of this fly, I can tell you that this thing floats like a cork. There are about 9 millimeters worth of closed cell foam stacked on this fly, which makes for that magic proportion of a whole lot of foam and a little bit of hook. The overall profile of the Fat Albert could imitate a grasshopper, stonefly adult or a cantaria beetle. Try this fly with black and tan foam or even yellow and brown for a couple different combinations is sure to catch the eye of a trophy trout. The creator of the fly Brent Taylor has been a guide in Chile for a long time and this fly has truly been a game changer for the last ten years.  If you look into any Chilean Patagonia fishing guides fly box I guarantee you he will have a few of these bad boys stashed away.

The Gypsy King

Created by Patagonia River Guides owner, operator, and guide, Rance Rathie, this fly is constructed of foam, elk hair, peacock, and rubber legs that bounce and move with the most subtle movement. It is deadly in multiple different angling situations in Patagonia, Chile. It floats like a cork and can hold up even the heaviest tungsten-bead dropper plunging to the depths. Not too flashy and not too drab, the Gypsy King grabs the attention of trout in large rivers and lakes but doesn’t spook those in smaller and more intimate environments.

THE CHUBBY CHERNOBYL

The Chubby Chernobyl comes from Idylwilde Flies out of Portland, Oregon. The Chubby is a take-off on the standard Chernobyl Ant, but with a much needed improvement; a big poly yarn wing that aids in flotation and visibility! This a great go to pattern in Patagonia, Chile and one that you can hang the biggest stonefly dropper in your box off of and it still will not sink.  Great visibility and a fish catching machine.

PARACHUTE RUBBERLEG CHERNOBYL ANT

This fly was the winner of the 1995 Jackson Hole One Fly Contest. It was designed by Mark Forslund and Allan Woolley, guides on the Green River below Flaming Gorge, Utah. Originally designed as a Mormon Cricket imitation for cutthroats, it has been successful throughout the Patagonia region of Chile and Argentina. The high density foam gives the fly excellent flotation and the rubber legs give it life-like action. Use a twitching action to help make the legs move around. Many variations are possible with this pattern using various colors of foam, thus it is referred to as a "Mutant" ant and thus it's name,  Parachute Rubber Leg Chernobyl Ant. Best time to use this fly is from Late Summer to Fall from January until the end of April.

AMY'S ANT

Amy's Ant comes from the vise of the illustrious Jack Dennis and is named after his daughter. This fly is a foam laden, rubber-legged fish catching machine and has come on strong as a Guide's favorite in Patagonia, Chile lately.  We love the profile and high vis post that this fly has and makes it one of our go to patterns when we are fishing a single dry on the bank in Patagonia.

We love throwing dry flies and we hope that these patterns have given you some insight on what dry flies that you should be throwing during the summer while fly fishing Chile.

German Brown Trout On The Release in Patagonia. Catch N Release 4 Peace

Brown Trout.  They are the pinnacle of trout fishing and they are our favorite fish to target in the river.  Of course we love all of our hard fighting trout but the brownie is the one that haunts our dreams at night and are always in search of the one.  The best way to get one of these giants takes time.  The pursuit of such a species is an absolute addiction and we have got it really bad.

Thankfully here in Patagonia we have an overabundance of above average size brown trout.  They are true predators here in Southern Chile and are at the top of the food chain.  Thankfully we do not have any large birds of prey like our rivers in Montana and what that means for our anglers is that these fish will expose themselves in the shallowest of water.

They do not have to hold in deep slots during the day as they have no other predators to contend with from upstairs which gives them the confidence to attack a stripped streamer or mouse fly on the surface in the brightest conditions.  This is one of the things that makes fishing in Patagonia, Chile so special and is one that we do not take for granted.  We simply capitalize on the opportunity and consistently bring fish in over 24" on a daily basis.  Not to say that every fish that you catch in Patagonia is over 6 pounds but your opportunities at such a fish are given to you multiple times throughout a day of fishing in Chilean Patagonia.

Hopefully you don't wet the bed when the big one decides to crush your fly.  Remember, strip set and then lift.  No trout sets here Larry, or you have to listen to your fellow buddies give you shit all day about that crappy hook set and the one that got away.

We are going to give you 3 tips on improving your catch rate for donkey size brown trout.

  1. Strip Set, Strip Set, Strip Set!!  Enough Said.
  2. Don't Stop Stripping!  Keep pulling all the way to the boat and figure 8 his ass if you run out of line!
  3. Put the wood to em and don't let him break you off in the logs.  We would rather see you die trying rather than letting that fish of a lifetime school you in the structure.

We hope these tips on fighting trophy brown trout help you land the fish of a lifetime, and always, Catch N Release 4 Peace.  Because that brown trout does matter and we want to see those genes carried on to the next generation of a predator.

Chilean Patagonia Rainbows Being Released Daily. Catch N Release 4 Peace

Chilean Rainbows are some of the hardest fighting fish that we have ever had the pleasure of doing battle with.  They are a work of art and each and every specimen is unique.  These fish are a testament to what cold, clean water fisheries can produce.

Our vision to protect these wonderful fish is very simple.  Educate the masses, lead by example, and smile as that Rainbow swims to live another day.  With each and every person that we can inspire that, is one more fish that will spawn and make more of these fantastic Chilean Rainbows.

If catching fat trout on dry flies in the Andean Summers is what you dream about, then spreading the word is your duty as an angler.  Share, Inspire, and I promise others will follow in your footsteps.  It is a wonderful feeling to show someone how Catch N Release fishing will only enhance their experience on stream and the good karma that you produce for yourself is also worth it's weight in gold.  It's funny how many more big fish you will find in your nets just from being an honest, conservation minded angler.  Catch N Release 4 Peace and watch your basket fill up with monsters of the stream.

Thanks for following along on our journey to educate the fishing community about Catch N Release 4 Peace.  We hope that you find inspiration in our writings and share with at least one angler on stream the positive effects of letting em go.

Until next time, keep on releasing and we will keep on preaching.
